While I don’t have an article on 30s lingerie yet you can read about 1920s lingerie. Did you know that the ’30s are very similar to both with long corsets or girdles, slips, and shorts like underwear worn by most women. House dress was the ideal dress to experiment with since just family saw her in it. Of course house dresses, while basic and usually created from practical durable cotton, followed the trends in cut and silhouette, and often displayed quite a few bright bold prints. With just her family and visiting lady neighbors, the most casual a woman dressed was in the apartments. Actually, most women still preferred to sew their own clothing or upcycle existing dresses into newer frocks. Normally, some concern for virtually nubby, textured, crepe, or crinkled rough fabrics became a trend, the rougher the smarter!
Less expensive fabrics, rough or peasant fabrics and cotton became more widely used. Sunbathing became a trend in the 1920’s and continued in the thirties as Coco Chanel and Hollywood stars encouraged the tan look. As a result, a tan began to mean one had time for leisure not that one had to work in the sun. Do you know an answer to a following question. What did the thirties woman look like? Since most women were not blessed with slim hips and narrow waists, shoulders were exaggerated with puff sleeves, shoulder pads, full collars, and caplet, butterfly’ or ruffled cap sleeves, to make waists and hips appear smaller in comparison, the ideal thirties woman was tall and slender with a very small waist and narrow hips.
Besides, the very loose, square, dropwaist, high knee length hem, and slightly boyish look of 1920s fashionfor women was completely gone by 1933, and was replaced with a far more modest and form fitted style with an accentuated natural high waist, fitted hips, longer ‘midcalf’ or floor length hemline, high neckline, and wide shoulders. Actually the ideal silhouette was by all means not realistic. Really enjoyed this piece. My grandmother was a young woman in her twenties during this time period and it was a wonderful way to connect with her as almost of all the pictures I have of her from that time period feature quite a few of the styles written about. Really had roots from her stylish younger days, it also explains loads of her fashion choices in her 70s 80s that I just saw as old.

I like retro culture and often try to get up something similar to the 30s ages. She was Russian, and always try to paid attention to many Europeans exclusives. Needless to say, winter snow pants were wide but fitted at the ankle to prevent snow going in one’s boots.

While easing out midthigh or just above the knees were they flared elegantly to the floor, evening dresses were also very fitted in the waist, slim and fitted through the hips.
Silky, clinging fabrics were common in evening gowns, often worn with a fur. Basically the ‘backless’ gown is a signature of 1930s evening wear. That said, evening dresses had hems that very nearly uched the floor and often had small trains in the back. Considering the above said. Cloche evolved into the slouchhat, still worn low on the face but with a lot more of a brim, sometimes worn turned up. Hats became a primary method to glam up an ensemble. Wide majority of hats were worn in the Thirties.
Basically the 20’s cloche and the beret lingered on from the previous decade. Straw hats in the summer, widebrimmed gardening or garden party hats. By the way, the fashion industry underwent many changes during this decade in response to the severe economic hardships of the time. As long as clothing should be mass produced for far less than madetoorder custom garments, factory made garments became popular. Then again, the insurgence of ready to wear fueled the buy in the premises catalogue market. These dresses had more embellishment and detail than a house dress. They tended to be solid colors or more subdued prints. One unique house dress variation was the reversible house wrap dress, called a hooverette. With all that said… Now that is a smart woman. It was two dresses in one, with two sides. Practical, affordable, washable, cotton percale and true to thirties style they sported ruffle sleeves, accentuated tied waste, and a slim cut through the hips, the hooverette was the perfect daily dress. On p of this, they stuck with the standard silhouette and classic thirties features. Often referred to as city, metropolitan, or wn tailored these dresses were usually silk or rayon crepe, not cotton. Run errands, attend a tea or see a matinee she should need a smart afternoon or day dress, with the intention to shop.
