As depicted in manuscript and ivories, anglo Saxon women’s dress consists of a couple of layers of clothing.

If you look carefully at plate 5, you usually can see women is wearing some sort of sleeveless poncho like cloak, a pale undersleeved garment and a light red dress.
The sleeveless poncho always was largely a mystery.
Undoubtedly it’s feasible that this poncho covers jewelry which was commonly worn. Surely it’s impossible to see what neckline looked like or if it wrapped around body somehow, since women’s shoulders were probably usually shown covered. That is interesting. OwenCrocker describes her observations of it on pages 213 and 214 of her book. So it is fantastic! I’ll have to look into it. How fun to write novels set in this era. While various scholars of archaeological dress, I’ve come to practically respect Owen Crocker’s work. On p of that, lots of us are aware that there is completely one book we did look for that covers the 10th century with detail sort I wanted and that was ‘Owen Crocker”s Dress in Anglo Saxon England. I’m preparing to use inline citations, since we can’t seem to get my footnotes plugin to work. You’re intending to see me mostly citing her. Now, a full bibliography is at post bottom, any plate has always been credited underneath it. Anglo Saxon period is mostly defined as being from 450 until the Norman invasion in For my purposes, and since we’re dealing with 10th century specifically, it’s crucial to see that by this late ‘Anglo Saxon’ period country we think of as England was beginning to form and dominating religion was Christianity.
