With her body as the canvas and her garments as paints that she mixes to look for balance and proportion, her approach to dressing has been like making a painting, she says.
She won’t acquire something unless she understands specifically what she’ll combine it with.
I’m oftentimes completing outfits in my head, she says, when I’m out on earth. Despite her astounding wardrobe, she isn’t wealthy. Her mother, a dressmaker, and father, a tailor, one and the other survived concentration camps during World War I. She was born in Israel in 1950 and emigrated with her family to NY in I owe everything to them, she says. Whenever replacing buttons, hemming sleeves, and adding darts, her parents instilled in her a keen eye for tailoring, and she alters virtually almost any piece she purchases. They sewed all my clothes, and my mother went to big lengths to make me into a little doll. We started making mood boards and pulling images we were attracted to.
It’s been a bit of a while, we started looking for fabrics and working on fit last September.
Even before that, we were truly showing what we wanted to do.
After I stopped I interned for a fashion PR company on the London Collections and happened to be chums with guys like Matthew Miller, when they lived in London and played for Leeds.
I was preparing to move to London College of Fashion and get a men’s design course, Know what, I wasn’t planning to go back to playing soccer … but ultimately we went back to soccer.
I interned at Men’s Health, To be honest I was a nice intern, I would go get coffee and run errands. Hopefully we’ll see if I learned anything, reason we did all this was as they wanted to study all unusual business aspects and finally use that knowledge for something. We wanted this to come from an individual place.
LA’s so casual, I always simply throw on jeans and a tshirt and at night I’ll put on a suede jacket or a denim trucker.
By keeping this first collection short and focused, and the jackets in limited edition runs, Baker and Rogers are able to control the whole endeavor, from concept to customer purchases.
That doesn’t merely ease creative and logistical processes, it affords all men time to focus on their fulltime gigs. We caught up with Rogers previous week just before launch to make sure more about how athlete’s love of men’s fashion started, how Hampton + Baker was born, and what we could expect from newborn brand’s second release. Anyhow, it’s a way for us to be creative but to keep it unsophisticated. Seriously. We wanted to keep it straightforward, we all have different jobs so we kept it to 5 jackets made in a limited run here in Los Angeles with antique buttons and custom embroideries.
